Remove MSN Messenger

I was looking around for a method to remove the very irrirating MSN Messenger in my PC the other day, and can’t seem to find it in the Add/Remove Programs. So search the net and found a solution to uninstall it 🙂 There is a couple ways to uninstall MSN Messenger.

One way which the easiest is too run this command from Start Menu -> Run.

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Another option that you can try :

Windows messenger: Windows Messenger is considered a part of the Windows operating system, so to uninstall it:

  • Go to Control Panel
  • Click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
  • And at the bottom of the list, uncheck Windows Messenger

Now “OK” your way back out, and Windows Setup will run and uninstall Windows Messenger.

Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting

Simply delete the following Registry Key:


Uninstall Messenger

You have to edit sysoc.inf (located in /WINDOWS/inf). Under [Components] you should see the following line:
msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7. Take the word ‘hide’ out of the line, and it should look like this:
msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7. Exit and save.

Go to Add or Remove Programs, and click on Add/Remove Windows Components. There you should now be able to uncheck the MSN Messenger Service, and by clicking Next it will uninstall.

Remove MSN Messenger from Outlook Express and Prevent the Delay


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Value Name: Hide Messenger, Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value), Value Data: (2 = remove messenger). Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called ‘Hide Messenger’ and set the value to 2.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Removing Windows Messenger 5.0

Go to start > run and enter
msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}
Windows Messenger 5 will then be automatically removed.


C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Messenger
In this folder you will find a file called messenger.msi, right click on it and select uninstall. The version number of messenger can be obtained by
opening the main Windows Messenger window and going to Help > About.
